Meaning: “I intended to…” / “I thought I would…”
The structure “～つもりだった” is used to express a previous intention or plan that did not go as expected. The speaker uses this structure to convey that they intended or believed they would do something, but things didn’t turn out as planned.

※Note:

• “～つもりだった” is often used when the speaker feels regret or disappointment about not being able to accomplish what they intended.
• This structure can also indicate misunderstanding, where the speaker thought something happened, but in reality, it didn’t.
